It is the biggest financial decision for many younger adults: Should I rent a home or buy one? To help people understand the trade-offs, The Times has just relaunched its popular rent-versus-buy calculator. The calculator, which The Times’s Upshot section built, has been updated in several important ways, including to take into account the 2017 tax law that affected the mortgage-interest deduction. Ultimately, the calculator can’t tell you whether you should rent or buy. That decision depends on the future paths of home prices and rents, which are unknowable.

Not surprisingly, China’s leaders did not like what they heard, and they didn’t budge. Years of erratic and irresponsible policies, excessive Communist Party control and undelivered promises of reform have created a dead-end Chinese economy of weak domestic consumer demand and slowing growth. The only way that China’s leaders can see to pull themselves out of this hole is to fall back on pumping out exports. The tide of Chinese exports will continue, tensions with the United States and other trading partners will grow, China’s people will become increasingly unhappy with their gloomy economic prospects and anxious Communist Party leaders will respond with more repression. It is baked into China’s political system and has only worsened during President Xi Jinping’s decade in power.

After all, we are so used to seeing older men playing action heroes with all the verve and pep of younger men. The original “Speed,” which was directed by Jan de Bont, came out in 1994 and grossed about $350 million worldwide. New York CNN —A federal judge in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday blocked a new Biden administration rule that would prohibit credit card companies from charging customers late fees higher than $8. “Consumers will shoulder $800 million in late fees every month that the rule is delayed — money that pads the profit margins of the largest credit card issuers. The new rule would apply to large credit card issuers — those with more than 1 million accounts. The push to target credit card fees is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to ease financial burdens for many Americans. New York CNN —Target is limiting the number of stores that will sell LGBTQ-themed merchandise for Pride Month in June following a boycott from right-wing activists last year that took a toll on the brand’s bottom line. About half of its 2,000 stores will sell the Pride collection, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the news. The changes are a “sensible approach,” Neil Saunders, managing director of retail for GlobalData, told CNN. Pride problemsLast year, Target pulled Pride merchandise from some stores after the company and its employees became the focus of a “volatile” anti-LGBTQ campaign, which included threats against its store workers. CNN spoke to three Israeli whistleblowers who worked at the Sde Teiman desert camp, which holds Palestinians detained during Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Reports of abuse at Sde Teiman have already surfaced in Israeli and Arab media after an outcry from Israeli and Palestinian rights groups over conditions there. CNN has requested permission from the Israeli military to access the Sde Teiman base. The account tallied with details of a letter authored by a doctor working at Sde Teiman published by Ha’aretz in April. The accuser, economist Sarah Aneesah Hakh, told an online press conference held in the capital Georgetown that former Minister Nigel Dharamlall sexually assaulted her in 2020 and 2021. Hakh said the first alleged incident occurred during a business meeting when Dharamlall was Guyana’s senior minister of regional development. He has been photographed recently with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo. In a March statement, Guyanese women’s rights group Red Thread criticized officials for failing the accuser. During their meeting, Hakh alleges Dharamlall tried to remove her clothes.

Whatever their personal or political allegiances, many college students are seeing their experience on campus influenced by the Israel-Hamas war. Saltz: Parents can talk to their kids, but the talking needs to be more in the question format than in the lecture format. And so, people are having difficulty maintaining a friendship if they now somehow feel they’re not on the same team. Many of the kids out there doing the protests are not saying anything antisemitic. If so, I would advise you to seek some mental health care because it’s really hard to help your child if you’re undone.

Officials said a US delegation will travel to Niger over the weekend to discuss how it will be carried out. “Niger is pretty profound in the decision of the government there … to have us depart or at least go to very low numbers,” Maier said. Since the coup in July, airspace has been closed over Niger to foreign militaries who have all had to submit individual requests for airspace to conduct military flights, one US official told CNN. A US military official explained that the withdrawal will come in phases over a period of months. The footprint will continue to shrink in phases as equipment and personnel not deemed necessary are moved out of country.

Qu, Baidu's vice president and head of communications, has sparked backlash over her comments endorsing a tough workplace culture. A former Baidu employee said Qu brought Huawei’s aggressive corporate culture with her to Baidu.
